The deed between the Moran Cemetery Association and John E Reed of
Spokane Falls was signed on Nov 02, 1891. The sum of $10.00 was paid
for the property. Thomas Weger established Moran Cemetery on his land
about 1889, naming it for Joseph Moran.
A few bodies were
removed from the Cannon Hill Cemetery, which was in Spokane, in 1889. Because of
this we find some graves with burial dates back to 1883, however I only have them back to 1876, which means I am missing some.
According to the sexton, Joanne Brown, it is owned by the county
under the supervision of District #3 Cemetery Board of Spokane County
WA. I have repeatedly tried to obtain a copy of the sexton files and am refused.
A survey of this cemetery was first completed by Vicki and Mike Morris and
myself in the summer of 2000. I transcribed from these readings and then compared this with a transcription from "Spokane County Rural Cemeteries",
pub. 1961 by EWGS.
I found many duplicates, due to some listed with different names in older records. Some listings are also really unidentifiable, so I have tried to list those on the miscellaneous page. Perhaps one day we can know who they are. There were some footstones which I did not list if they are only initials.
Names with an asterisk * at the end of their entry,
are from 1961 reading and have no headstone. I only have the actual location on a few. The rest I have listed in the section, if I found a stone in my 2005 visit.
There are four Sections, A, B, C and D.
I revisited the cemetery Aug 30, 2005 using my digital camera, and have a photo of all existing and legible stones or markers. It is very evident that there are many missing markers and stones. In Section C there are only a few existing stones. In some areas family has replaced the older stone. Some which were in my first reading are now missing. I have tried to label these accordingly.
