Total records = 1,554.
On Hwy 95 from the Potlatch Junction, travel north for 2.4 miles.
Turn left onto Freeze Road and continue to an intersection about
a half mile further on. Turn right when the road turns into a lane
and go up the hill to the Freeze Church and Cemetery.
The church can be seen for a short time from Hwy 95 if one knows
when to look. It has become a real landmark in this area. It was
left unattended for a short time, and the church was no longer
used for services that often. In the last years that has turned
around. A group has formed an association, there are restoration
projects in the works all the time to completely restore the church.
With this happening, the cemetery has grown tremendously. It
is in such good condition, and they are extending the burial grounds
to accomodate this. The sadness was to see them putting in the
lawn type of section. Most on the top of the hill and down the
sides have many of the upright monuments, which give such beauty
to a cemetery. The one section out front as you arrive is all
flat with nothing of beauty to add to the setting.
This cemetery sits on a hill overlooking the area on all four
sides. It has trees and shrubbery, which seem to be managed well.
Those buried here have roots back as settlers who came out on
the Wooddy Wagon Train, 1873, with all the settlers choosing this
area of the Washington Territory to settle. John Freeze and his
family were a part of that group. Some are buried in Whitman County
Washington cemeteries, which are just across the Idaho/Washington
State border. The monument about this group is in the Silver Creek
Cemetery.
I walked and read this cemetery on Jun 14, 2003. This
includes all existing and legible headstones. I use a digital camera
to read the cemetery and am willing to share.
