Riverdale Cemetery is owned and operated by the City of Columbus, GA.

History

Riverdale Cemetery was established in 1890 as availability of plots at Linwood Cemetery became scarce. The brick building was erected in 1915, featuring a chapel and housing for the sexton flanking an arched passageway for funeral processions, and topped by a bell tower. Today, Riverdale is the largest of the four city-owned cemeteries.

Riverdale Cemetery is also home to Jewish sections maintained by, the Temple Israel and Shearith Israel Congregations. Paupers have been buried at Riverdale since as far back as 1905, in areas called Strangers Grounds; most of these graves lack markers. In 1956 an area was set aside having all miniature lots, and was called Babyland.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
