Double Butte Cemetery is owned and maintained by the City of Tempe.

History

The cemetery was founded in 1888 on the baseline of the Double Butte Mountain for which it is named. Many people were buried at this location before it was officially designated as a cemetery. This led to some local citizens forming the Tempe Cemetery Association in an effort to formally manage it as a cemetery. The property was donated to the Association by Niels Peterson in 1888. The cemetery took on financial hardship during the Great Depression. This lead to poorly maintained grounds.

In 1958, the City of Tempe took over the cemetery.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
