Cemetery History

African American miners were brought from the Midwest to Roslyn in the 1880s to work in the mines during labor disputes. Other African American families followed the initial Black immigrants. Although many African American families moved away, by 1900 the Black residents still totaled more than 20% of Roslyn's population.

Notes

Cemetery is in very good condition and well cared for.  Cemetery is fenced in but not locked.  There is plenty of room for parkin.   The oldest marked grave was from 1890 and the most recent burial was 2013.  There is also a memorial to 4 people killed fighting wildfires.  Per the sign at the entrance this is an African American Cemetery, of those who came to Roslyn to work in the mines.

Cemetery Records

Records below were compiled by Suzanne Livingstone in April 2018 during a visit to the cemetery. These are the stones that are visible.  It is possible there may be other stones, some of which are no longer visible, either under grass or very weathered to where they are non legible.  Noticed also were at least 22 possible additional burial plots with either no information or non legible.

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
