Cemetery History

Hazelwood Cemetey was established in 1854 when J.B. Grinnell donated 12 acres of land for a cemetery. That same year, he founded the Town of Grinnell.

It wasn't until 1872, however, that ownership of the cemetery was formally transferred to the newly incorporated City of Grinnell. The city, however, had limited funds to care for the graveyard. In 1892, the Grinnell Ladies Cemetery Association was formed to help raise funds for the cemetery, provide for its upkeep, and acquire new improvements. The Association ended up purchasing an additional 22 acres from the Grinnell family.

In 1955, the Association disbanded and transferred all of its duties to the City of Grinnell.
