Claremont Cemetery
Danville, Richmond County, Quebec

Contributed by Leslie Nutbrown, Oct 28, 2007, last edited Sep 23, 2008 . Total records = 133.

From Richmond follow route 116 to Danville. At the lights at the junction of routes 116 and 255, turn left (North) on route 255. After passing a couple of sharp corners watch for a road on your left called Felix de Kingsley. Take this road and you will go up a big hill. Continue until you see a road branching off to the left. This is Claremont Road but there was no sign at the time of my visit. The cemetery is a short distance on this road.

This old burial ground high on Claremont Hill is the final resting place of some of Shipton Township's earliest settlers, some of whom were United Empire Loyalists, and it offers spectacular views for many miles. It dates from 1804 when most of this area was a wilderness.

At one time the cemetery was in disrepair and used as pastureland but in 1940 Nelson Andrews and George Philbrick started a restoration project and now it is once again used and there have been some recent burials. There is a fence and gate and it is kept regularly mowed.

In 1966 Nelson and Elgie Andrews compiled a list of burials from the tombstones. I have compared this list to what we found in 2007 and any names which appeared on the list and are not visible today are shown with an asterisk (*).

Susan Nutbrown, Julia MacDonald and I walked and read this cemetery in August, 2007 and made a complete recording of all legible tombstones and markers.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
