Tavenner Cemetery
Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia

Lat: 39° 15' 17"N, Lon: 81° 33' 03"W

Contributed by Teresa Fordyce, Jul 21, 2003, last edited Jul 22, 2007 [s82c43@verizon.net]. Total records = 80.

The cemetery is located between Hugh and Hamilton Streets, along Camden Avenue, in South Parkersburg.

The property was originally granted to Col. Hugh Phelps, a Revolutionary War Soldier. Mr. Phelps was the son-in-law of Capt. James Neal, the first permanent settler of Parkersburg. Mr. Phelps sold the property to Thomas Tavenner, who acquired a substantial amount of property in the area before his death in 1857.

The cemetery is one of the oldest in Wood County. It is no longer used and sadly, not very well kept. Most of the stones are broken and have fallen over, and others are so badly worn that they are no longer legible. The cemetery has been the victim of vandalism on more than one occasion.

Wood County Historian, John A. House, did a partial transcription of this cemetery in the early 1930's. He listed a few burials that I was unable to locate stones for. These will be marked with an asterisk (*).

I walked and transcribed this cemetery on Jul 17, 2003. Complete accuracy of this transcription cannot be guaranteed, please verify dates with other sources.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
