Cemetery Background

The land was donated by the Hilts and Johnston families. The first burials were in 1888.

As of August 2020, there were 696 burials and memorial stones, including 103 veterans.

Greenwood School (Hunters Creek School) District 17, 1-8 grades was also located on the land. It served from 1888 until 1939 when they consolidated with Hunters School, the building was removed some time after that

Greenwood Cemetery is operated by its elected officers and five elected trustees. The original land was surveyed in 1908 and was officially recorded and incorporated November 3, 1924.  Some time later the organization applied for and received a nonprofit status.

Clean up day is the Saturday before Memorial Day weekend, with a potluck lunch followed by the annual meeting.  Everyone who owns a lot or has family buried  here is encouraged to attend.  Except for mowing the area several times during the summer all work is done by volunteers

The cemetery is completely fenced and has it's own well.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
