Driving Directions

To locate the cemetery, go east on 8th Street which runs in front of Central Washington University campus. Turn north on Water and west on 15th. Proceed about one mile. The cemetery is on the west side of the street.

Cemetery History

This cemetery is owned by the Diocese of Yakima, used and maintained by Saint Andrew Catholic Church under the supervision of the diocese, 401 S Willow, Ellensburg, Washington. There is no on-site caretaker. Although the iron gate says 1914, there are earlier burials.

Sometime during the 1930s, Holy Cross Cemetery took over the county cemetery which was located in the adjoining property. Most of the county burials are located on the left (south) side of the cemetery.

Cement stones were provided by the cemetery for those who couldn't afford stones. Most of the county burials give only the death date as they were probably without families and no one knew their birthdays. Many of the county markers are badly worn and impossible to read. Because of the wear, I may have misread some of them.

Cemetery Records

Records published below were transcribed from tombstone inscriptions by Shelli Steedman during visits to the cemetery in the summers of 2002 and 2003. This final transcription was completed in January 2004.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
