Cemetery History

Oakwood Cemetery was Bedford's second cemetery, being located adjacent to Longwood Cemetery. It was added just prior to the Civil War and was developed on the grounds to the south and east of Longwood.

The last section of Oakwood was designated as the Elks National Cemetery and served as the burial place for residents of the Elks National Home from the early 1900s until the Elks Home constructed its own cemetery around 1960.

City of Bedford Records

Records below were acquired from the City of Bedford on December 10, 2019. Dates of death range from 1842 to 2019.

NOTE: there are many records which appear to have the gender incorrect, for example there is a "ABBOTT, Margaret L. Clinebell" listed as male. These came from the City this way, we made no attempt to correct them.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
