Cypress Hills Cemetery is a non-profit, non-sectarian, membership corporation.

History

Cypress Hills Cemetery was developed in 1848 and accepted its first burial in 1851. It was developed using the "memorial park" concept that swept the country during the middle-19th century. The founders searched for a site where richly wooded hills and dells, and ponds, and would create the feeling of seclusion, privacy and pensive tranquility of the ideal "rural" cemetery. The land which they selected was on a promontory with commanding vistas of the ocean, New York, the Long Island countryside and the distant blue hills of Connecticut.

An 1852 law in New York City ended burials in Manhattan. Cypress Hills Cemetery responded by donating burial grounds to churches there. Many churches took the offer and transferred some 35,000 remains to Cypress Hills.

The Cemetery spans 225 acres and features two three-story mausoleums. In 1862, a section of the cemetery was set aside for Cypress Hills National Cemetery for soldiers of the Civil War. Cypress Hills Abbey was built in 1931 and Memorial Abbey built in 1936. To date, some 400,000 persons have been interred at Cypress Hills Cemetery.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
