Melvin Cemetery
Nelson County, North Dakota

NW 1/4 Sec 33 Melvin Township Nelson County North Dakota

Contributed by Anne Braun, Aug 27, 2001 [annieb1961@comcast.net]. Total records = 11.

From the intersection of Highway 15 and County Road 5, go 10 miles north.

It is a small pioneer cemetery that has been neglected. A majority of the burials occurred in Mar-Apr 1890. This was because of a diptheria epidemic that was in the area at the time.

I visited this cemetery on Jul 26, 2001. Cemeteries of Nelson County Volume 12 Red River Genelogical Society 1975, also has information on this cemetery. I may not have all the burials, the tall grass and poor condition of the cemetery, make it difficult to know.

History of Nelson County Volume II under Peterburg North Dakota historical dates, 1890 (March-April) it says the following:

"It was in the The winter/spring of a terrible diphtheria epidemic. Many Children died like the seven that is found in the Melvin Cemetery records. Mr. and Mrs. Carl O. Flem lost five children in ten days.

The last one to die was an eight year old girl named Petra. The evening before she died, she called to her mother to her bedside and said "Mother, please don't cry for me, because in the morning I'll be with Jesus."

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
