Travel south from Leakesville, Mississippi on highway 63, you will
go 2.3 miles. This will be the intersection with Vernal River Road,
take this right hand (west) turn on the Vernal River Road and go
10.4 miles. On your right will be the John Kittrell home, you will
need to stop there and get permission to go to this old Cooley Cemetery.
The only road to the cemetery goes through the Kittrell property.
You will take the dirt and grassy road through the woods for 1.2
miles and will end up at a small clearing. Mr. Kittrell keeps
the road and this turn-a-round bush-hogged for access to these
3 graves.
The area is in very heavy woods and is grown up pretty bad. You
can still see the four corner posts that at one time held a fence
around the graves. This was a private family cemetery and there
hasn’t been any maintenance done to it in several years, and as
you see the last burial here was in the year 1880.
John Kittrell and I walked this cemetery on Apr 13, 2007 and
the information was taken from headstone inscriptions.
