Fort Leavenworth Military Prison Cemetery
Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas

Lat: 39° 22' 13"N, Lon: 94° 55' 23"W

Contributed by Darby Lea Edwards, Nov 07, 2003 [doubloon@kc.rr.com]. Total records = 240.

From Kansas City take US 73 North to Leavenworth, Hwy 73 turns west and is called Metropolitan Ave, Go 3 blocks to the entrance of Fort Leavenworth. Inside turn north onto Grant Ave for approximately 3 miles. Turn North on Bluntville Ave, which merges with McClellan Ave after less than a quarter mile, then proceed for another quarter mile. Turn West on Sheridan Ave and up the hill. The cemetery is located on the right side of the road behind a fence.

This military cemetery is the property of the United States Government and is maintained by the Disciplinary Barracks, and only for it's use. The old name of the United States Disciplinary Barracks was the United States Military Prison.

This information comes from tombstones in the old historical cemetery on Fort Leavenworth. I did my Gold Award Project for Girls Scouts with this cemetery and would like to share the information I gathered.

The last known person buried here was in 1957. The cemetery is for unclaimed bodies of soldiers in the United States Disciplinary Barracks, the military prison. These days family members are expected to claim the bodies. I don't even know if anyone has died in the prison lately and they claim to not even have a plan for burial were it ever to happen again.

I mapped the cemetery and put the tombstones in order by row and column as they were in the cemetery when I walked and surveyed it in September 2003. In addition to this listing, there were 58 unmarked burial plots. Available is an PDF formatted file of the cemetery map here.

cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

Clear Digital Media, Inc.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
