History

Walnut Ridge Cemetery was incorporated in 1838 as a non-profit organization whose trustees were appointed by Wall Street Methodist-Espicopal Church in Jeffersonville. In 1913, the church granted the trustees sole power to appoint new trustees.

The original partition of the cemetery was designed by Edmund Lee, the designer of Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY. Originally designed on 15 acres of rolling hills with tree-lined lanes, the cemetery began with 1,320 lots on land donated by the Wathen Family estate. Today, the cemetery includes nearly 100 acres and approximately 20,000 burial sites and a mausoleum building.

Walnut Ridge Cemetery is named for the ridge it is situated on. The oldest monument with a readable date goes back to 1817; however there are many monuments that are older and more weathered.

Among the famous burials include Josephine Sanders, first wife of Colonel Sanders (Kentucky Fried Chicken), who passed away in 1975, and Harland Sanders Jr., son for Colonel Sanders, who passed away in 1932. Both are buried in Section N.
