He worked as a stenographer in Chicago and New York City. In July 27 1896, he moved to the Isthmus of Panama where he worked ten years for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. He married Alice France of Sioux Falls, South Dakota in October 23, 1901 and divorced in May 1914. He joined the Isthmian Canal Company on May 7, 1906 serving as a Spanish Translator. He served as foreman clerk of the U.S. District Court in the Canal Zone. In 1930, he married Thyra Osorio Sheibley, born in the British Virgin Islands. He worked ten years for the New York Sun's Panama reporter. He was admitted to the Bar in Panama and practiced law before the 5th Circuit Court. He died at his home in Panama City on September 26, 1958 and was buried at the Corozal American Cemetery.
