Background: Fort D.A. Russell Cemetery, located on Francis E. Warren Air Force Base was established in 1867 shortly after the post’s founding to protect the Union Pacific Railroad. Originally named for Brig. Gen. David Allen Russell, the fort later became Warren AFB, but the cemetery retained its historic title. Among the first interments were Pvt. John Saunders, Pvt. Maurice Gorman, and Capt. James Cahill, with early sections planned for officers, enlisted personnel, and civilians. The cemetery holds over 800 graves, including soldiers, dependents, civilians, Buffalo Soldiers from the 9th and 10th Cavalry, and World War II German and Italian POWs. Although now closed to new burials, it remains an active heritage site maintained by the 90th Civil Engineer Squadron.
