Background: Mound Cemetery was established in 1851, making it one of the city’s oldest burial grounds, named after the presence of ancient Native American burial mounds that long predate European settlement. Mound Cemetery became the final resting place for many of Racine’s early settlers, civic leaders, and veterans of the Civil War. Among its notable interments are soldiers from nearly every major American conflict, as well as prominent industrialists and public figures from Racine’s formative years. The cemetery has been maintained by the City of Racine since its founding.
