Directions: Located in the VA Medical Center complex west of downtown, the cemetery is accessed from the north side of W National Ave by entering into the Medical Center complex.
Background: Wood National Cemetery was established in 1871 on the grounds of the Northwestern Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, one of the first federal homes created to care for Union veterans of the Civil War. Originally known simply as the “Home Cemetery,” it was designated a National Cemetery in 1937 and named in honor of Gen. George H. Wood, the home’s first governor. Over the years, the cemetery expanded to encompass more than 50 acres, becoming the final resting place for over 38,000 veterans and their family members from every major U.S. conflict since the Civil War. It's currently Located adjacent to the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center.
