Background: Forest Home Cemetery was established in 1850 when members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church purchased 72 acres on the outskirts of the city to create a nonsectarian burial ground. Designed by naturalist Increase A. Lapham in the picturesque “garden cemetery” style with winding drives and landscaped grounds, it became the preferred resting place for many of Milwaukee’s early leaders and prominent citizens. As the city grew, the cemetery expanded to nearly 200 acres and added notable structures. In 1872, the federal government purchased a small lot to hold the remains of 21 soldiers who died in nearby hospitals.
