Background: Forest Hill Cemetery was established in 1857 when the city purchased a tract of land. During the Civil War, the city began burying Union Soldiers in a special lot, and then in 1886 donated that lot to the federal government. There is also a separate lot for Confederate Soldiers about 100 yards away, but this lot was never donated to the federal government. The cemetery is also the site of an old Native American burial ground, evidenced by an Effigy Mound Grouping.
