Background: Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery was established in 2006 to provide a state-operated burial ground for veterans and their families in the central and southern regions of the state. Construction began in October 2010, supported by a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs grant, and the cemetery was officially dedicated on Memorial Day 2012. Named in honor of U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman Senior Chief Donel C. Kinnard—a highly decorated Vietnam veteran and lifelong advocate for veterans’ causes.
