Background:

Fort Walla Walla was established in 1856. Fort Walla Walla was first established in 1818 by Donald McKenzie of the Northwest Company as Fort Nez Perce. It later became known as Fort Walla Walla in 1856, named for the river and the Indian tribe in the vicinity. The post cemetery was established in 1858. The oldest known burial was that Private Jacob Leonard, Company B, 9th Infantry, who died February 3, 1859. Today it is part of Fort Walla Walla Park, operated by the city.

The soldiers buried here were involved in some Indian conflicts including the Battle of Frenchtown, The Battle at Steptoe Butte, Colonel George Wright's Expedition, and the Battle of Whitebird Canyon part of the Nez Perce Indian War with Chief Joseph's Band. Veteran's of these expeditions are buried here along with other personnel of the Fort which was decommissioned as an Army base in 1910.
