Background: Dartford Cemetery was established in 1896 on donated land after the death of an early pioneer, Neeltje Blom Esveldt. The cemetery is a remnant of a once-bustling settlement that sprang up around a grist and sawmill built by brothers Herb and Lafayette Dart in 1883 and supported a post office, general store, schoolhouse, and other businesses in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1900 the Dartford Cemetery Association was formed to manage the grounds, and over the decades about 144 known burials took place there, with burial plots originally sold at modest prices and the community itself fading as a residential area developed around it.
