Directions: Located in the southern half of Bainbridge Island, the cemetery lies on the south side of Old Mill Rd, at the end of Cemetery Rd.

Background: Port Blakely Cemetery was established in 1880 to serve the mill town of Port Blakely, which grew up around the Port Blakely Mill Company founded by Captain William Renton in the mid-19th century. The land for the cemetery was originally part of property associated with the mill and town community, chosen to be close enough for residents yet removed from the mill’s noise and smoke, and it began as a two-acre burial ground for mill workers and their families. In 1946, the mill relinquished control and the cemetery has since been managed by a volunteer nonprofit board (Port Blakely Cemetery, a 501(c)(13) organization) that maintains the grounds through donations and plot sales; additional acreage was acquired from IslandWood in the early 2000s to expand burial space. The cemetery contains more than 1,200 interments, reflecting the ethnically diverse workforce of Port Blakely’s historic mill town, including European and Asian (notably Japanese-American) residents and their descendants, with a number of unmarked or older graves dating to the community’s early years.
