Background: Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1887 to serve Seattle's rapidly growing population, while Washelli Cemetery began in 1888 under the name Oaklake Cemetery; after financial struggles, it was reorganized and renamed Washelli (a Chinook jargon word meaning "west wind"). In 1914, the American Necropolis Corporation acquired and consolidated the properties, creating Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park and developing it as a landscaped memorial park with mausoleums, lawn sections, and garden settings.
