Background: Crown Hill Cemetery was established in 1903 in what was then a largely rural area northwest of downtown Seattle, serving families in the growing Ballard and Crown Hill communities. Originally developed as a private cemetery during a period of rapid expansion following Ballard's annexation to Seattle in 1907, it provided a convenient burial ground for residents of the city’s north end. Over the decades, Crown Hill Cemetery expanded in phases, adding family plots, veterans' sections, and columbarium niches as cremation became more common.
