Background:

Zackuse Family Cemetery is the modern name of an old Native American burial ground located east of the banks of Lake Sammamish, in an area known as "Zackuse Creek". It's believed the burial ground dates back to at least the 1700s.

Many members of the Zackuse Family (Zacheus) are buried there. The only identified burial thus far was "Thomas Zackuse", who died in 1944.

In 2000, the cemetery was destroyed by thieves who used a backhoe to dig up several graves in what was believed to be an attempt to find bones and skulls to sell on the black market.

In 2018, the City of Sammamish built a "fish passage project" that used an underground culvert to lead fish into the wooded area where the cemetery had been.
