Background: Mt. Olivet Cemetery was established in the 1870s as Renton was emerging as a coal mining and industrial community along the southern shore of Lake Washington. Created to serve the growing population of miners, mill workers, and their families, the cemetery became one of the city's principal burial grounds during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
