Background: Fort Worden Post Cemetery was established in June 1902, shortly after the activation of Fort Worden, when Private Elisha Webb of the 126th Coast Artillery became the first burial. In 1903, the Secretary of War designated it as the official cemetery for the three Puget Sound harbor defense forts—Worden, Casey, and Flagler. Over time, more than 430 interments have been made, spanning from the Spanish-American War era to modern conflicts. Following the closure of Fort Worden in 1953 and its conversion to a Washington State Park in 1971, the cemetery remained under Army control until its transfer to the National Cemetery Administration in August 2020.
