Background:

There is a lone grave located in Critchfield Gulch in northern Asotin County. It is located about 1/4 mile south of the Critchfield Gulch Road, and about 1-1/4 miles west of the junction of Critchfield Gulch Road and the Clarkston- Asotin Highway (129). The exact location of the grave is in N 1/2 of SE 1/4 of SE 1/4 of Sec 6, T10N, R46E, W.M.

There is a question as to who is buried there. Some believe that it was a Critchfield, an early settler there. Joe Bankson who owned and farmed the land for many years understood that it was a man who had worked on the old open ditch that carried water from Asotin to Clarkston and ran by this location. He was supposed to have died on the job and was buried there. The grave had a picket fence around it that was maintained for many years, but all sign of the grave or the fence is gone now. However, when Eliel and Sarah Dodson sold this land to Frank Morrison on Apr 24, 1897, this grave site was described on the deed and the exact location pinpointed. There is a housing development in the area at the present time.
