Background: Winchester National Cemetery originated during the Civil War, when the land was first used for burials as early as 1862. It was officially dedicated on April 8, 1866, and formally transferred to the U.S. government on December 1, 1870, when Jacob Baker sold the 4.89-acre tract for $1,500. The cemetery became the final resting place for Union soldiers who died in nearby battles including Winchester, New Market, Front Royal, Snickers Gap, Harper’s Ferry, Martinsburg, and Romney.
