Background: City Point National Cemetery was established in 1866 on land that served as a key Union supply base during the Civil War. The cemetery originated to inter soldiers who died in the large military hospitals and supply depots that operated at City Point, which was General Ulysses S. Grant’s headquarters during the Siege of Petersburg from 1864 to 1865. Many of the first burials were reinterments from nearby temporary battlefield graves and hospital cemeteries. Over time, the site expanded to encompass several acres, enclosed by brick walls and marked by a central flagpole and orderly rows of headstones.
