Background: Cold Harbor National Cemetery was established in 1866 on the site of the Battle of Cold Harbor, one of General Robert E. Lee’s last major victories. Covering 1.4 acres, the cemetery was created to inter soldiers from a 22-mile area surrounding the battlefield and remains part of the broader Richmond network of Civil War–era national cemeteries. The U.S. government formally acquired the land in 1870 for $200, adding adjoining property the following year. Among those buried is Augustus Barry, a Medal of Honor recipient and early cemetery superintendent. Preserved within a largely rural landscape near the Garthright House, which served as a Union field hospital, Cold Harbor National Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
