Background: The Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia was dedicated on November 1, 1997, as the first state-operated veterans cemetery established by the Virginia Department of Veterans Services. The 127-acre cemetery was developed through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ State Cemetery Grants Program, which covered most of the construction costs. The initial phase opened 23 acres for use, with long-term plans allowing for more than 60,000 interments as additional sections are developed.
