Background: The University of Virginia Cemetery, founded in 1828 was created to serve as the resting place for many of the institution’s professors, presidents, students and alumni. Adjacent to it is the section commonly referred to as the Confederate Cemetery, where 1,097 Confederate soldiers died in the university hospital during the Civil War are interred. In 2012, during expansion plans, archaeologists discovered a previously undocumented burial ground of at least 67 graves believed to be of enslaved or freed African Americans who labored for the university.
