Background: Fort Bliss National Cemetery was established as part of a major expansion of the national cemetery system between 1934 and 1939, addressing the growing burial needs of veterans after World War I. Though Fort Bliss itself dates back to 1849 and has had burials since 1863, Congress officially authorized a national cemetery there in June 1936, with construction funded in 1939. Its first interment held on March 7, 1940.
