Background: San Antonio National Cemetery traces its origins to 1867 when the city donated part of its burying ground to the U.S. government for use as a national cemetery, a transfer later formalized by deed in 1871. The first interments were Union soldiers reburied from the city cemetery and surrounding areas, along with many unknowns from the western frontier—314 of whom were laid to rest in a common grave marked by a monument in Section H.
