Directions: Located in the north-west portion of Murfreesboro city limits, along the north-east side of Old Nashville Highway, about 750 feet north of the intersection with McFadden Ln.

Background: Stones River National Cemetery was established by order of Major General George H. Thomas on March 29, 1864, with Captain John A. Means selecting the site and laying out the cemetery. The arduous work of disinterring and reburying Union soldiers, many from the Battle of Stones River and nearby battlefields like Franklin, Shelbyville, Tullahoma, and others, was largely carried out in 1865-1866 by the 111th United States Colored Troops under Chaplain William Earnshaw, and was mostly completed by 1867. The cemetery now contains over 6,100 Union dead (including more than 2,500 unknowns), as well as nearly 1,000 veterans from later wars. In 1933, administration of the cemetery was transferred from the War Department to the National Park Service.
