Background: In 1868, the Yankton Cemetery Association was established to develop a cemetery for the Yankton Territory. The first recorded burial was James McBinn in 1876. Prominent figures interred at Yankton include General Custer’s bandleader, several Territorial Governors, State Senators and Congressmen, and the notorious Jack McCall, who was hung for Wild Bill Hickok's murder on March 1, 1877. The Yankton Cemetery Association transferred ownership of the cemetery to the City of Yankton in 1972.
