Background: The Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Veterans Cemetery was established in June 2016 as a dedicated resting place for tribal veterans and their families. The cemetery spans 20 acres and was developed with a $3 million grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Cemetery Administration. The land for the cemetery was gifted to the tribe by the state's Dakota tribe. This cemetery is the third tribal burial ground in South Dakota.
