Background: Fort Meade National Cemetery was established by the Quartermaster Corps on September 24, 1878, the same day as its first interment, to serve the newly built Fort Meade, created by survivors of Custer’s 7th Cavalry to maintain peace among Native tribes and settlers. The cemetery remained active for 70 years, closing in 1948 after only 188 interments, and is distinguished by its variety of headstones and monuments reflecting both military and civilian burials. On May 22, 1973, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, cementing its role as both a historic and commemorative site.
