Background: Fort Jackson National Cemetery has its origins in 1916 when locals proposed converting Hampton family lands into a military training camp during the height of WWI. Camp Jackson was established in 1917, named for President Andrew Jackson, and renamed Fort Jackson in 1940. With the National Cemetery Expansion Act of 2003, Congress directed the establishment of six new national cemeteries. The Department of Defense transferred Fort Jackson training land in 2008 to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The cemetery was formally dedicated in 2008, and opened for burials in 2009.
