Background: Florence National Cemetery was established near the site of the Florence Prison Stockade, which was constructed in September 1864 to house Union prisoners of war.
Land for the cemetery was purchased from a local resident's estate about a quarter-mile from the POW camp. Original interments were made in two separate burial grounds, one containing 416 remains and the other approximately 2,322 remains, with interments at the larger site made in 16 trenches. In 1865, this site was designated a national cemetery, and remains from the smaller burial ground were transferred there. Remains were also disinterred from surrounding regions including Darlington, Cheraw and the Marion Districts for reinterment.
Florence National Cemetery today is comprised of two locations...
- The original location at 803 E National Cemetery Rd, identified by Sections A-F
- The new annex location at 850 Stockade Dr., identified by Sections 1-22
