Background: Beaufort National Cemetery has origins rooted in the Civil War era. After South Carolina seceded on December 20, 1860, Union forces occupied Beaufort within a year, establishing Fort Welles as headquarters for the Department of the South with up to 50,000 occupants.
The cemetery began with burials of Union soldiers who died in nearby hospitals during the occupation. Originally interred in various locations including East Florida and Hilton Head, approximately 2,800 remains were later moved from Georgia cemeteries to the national cemetery. The site also holds 117 Confederate soldiers and features a distinctive half-circle landscape design. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
