Background: Puerto Rico National Cemetery is located in Bayamon, approximately 13 miles from San Juan. The site was originally owned by the U.S. Navy and used as a machine gun range before being transferred to the Department of the Army for cemetery construction after World War II.

Negotiations for the cemetery began on July 12, 1948, when the land was officially transferred. The private firm Font & Montilla was contracted to build the 108.2-acre facility. The cemetery was dedicated on Veterans Day in 1949, becoming Puerto Rico's only national cemetery.

The dedication ceremony was attended by Governor Luis Munoz-Marin and Major General Herman Feldman, who noted that practically every Puerto Rican family had military service members during World War II. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 26, 1983.
