Background: Indiantown Gap National Cemetery was named after Native American communities including the Susquehannocks and Lenape tribes. The area became a battleground during the French and Indian War in the mid-1700s.
In the 1930s, the government acquired 12,047 acres in Dauphin and Lebanon counties for Pennsylvania National Guard training. Fort Indiantown Gap was established, with the 55th Infantry Brigade conducting the first maneuvers in summer 1932. The facility served various military purposes through World War II, the Korean War, and housed Southeast Asian refugees in 1975.
In 1976, a section of Fort Indiantown Gap was designated as a national cemetery serving Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, and West Virginia. Pennsylvania donated the 677-acre site to the Veterans Administration, establishing the cemetery's official status.
