Background: Carlisle Barracks Main Post Cemetery, also known as the Carlisle Indian School Cemetery, traces its origins to 1757 when the British Army first established a military post at Carlisle. The cemetery was formally established in 1863, during the Civil War, to inter Union soldiers who died in local military hospitals. In 1879, the Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded on the post, and Native American students who died while attending the school were buried in the cemetery. Over the years, the cemetery became the final resting place for both military personnel and Native American students. It's last interment took place in 2005, and today it's no longer accepting new burials.
