Background: Washington Crossing National Cemetery is located approximately three miles southwest of where General George Washington crossed the Delaware River on December 25-26, 1776, during his famous Revolutionary War maneuver that led to victory at the Battle of Trenton.
The cemetery sits on land originally granted by King Charles II to William Penn in 1681, which Penn deeded to Euro-American settlers in 1698. The property remained farmland for centuries until the Department of Veterans Affairs purchased it from Dolington Land, L.P., a Toll Brothers subsidiary, in 2008.
The cemetery was formally dedicated in 2009 and opened for burials in 2010, becoming Pennsylvania's fourth national cemetery and the 131st in the national cemetery system.
